31.     Who was the president of the United States when you were at war?
          Franklin D. Roosevelt

32.     What was your age when all this happened?
          I left at 18 years old and I returned when I was 21 years old.

33.     How did you get home from San Diego?
          I took a bus from San Diego to Salt Lake, then another bus from
          Salt Lake to Price, then I thumbed from Price to home. Back then
          there wasn't any traffic, so it was a while before anyone came
          along.

A few stories grandpa told me.

When we got to Japan there were a lot of little kids. Their parents were shot and
killed. The kids were sent to the hills to get away from the fighting. They
eventually were starved out. Many of them ended up dieing. The army started to
gather the kids up and try to help them. One time my group picked up a 12-year
boy and took him back to the base with us. We gave him a candy bar and he
gobbled it up. We made him a bed and snuck him in. If they found out we had
him we would have been court marshaled. We took care of him for a few days.
Later we were able to make arrangements for him. He did some labor work for
us. We had him set by the phone and listen for it to ring. If it would ring he was
to quickly run outside and yell to us that the phone was ringing. He couldn't
speak any English. He would run out and yell, "telle, telle, telle" until someone
would go answer it. The day we shipped home from the war, he was standing on
the docks waving goodbye to us.

When I left to go to San Diego, there were 16 of us plus our recruiter. Most of
these men were from Idaho. We went to get on the train and the train conductor
was not going to let us on. Our recruiter grabbed him by the neck and told him
that these men were going to go fight the war for us and he had better let them
on now. He had a few choice words he said to him also. The conductor ended
up giving them 16 Pullman's. You had to be pretty important and special to be
able to get a Pullman on a train.

There were a lot of rice patties and sugar cane in Okinawa. One time the truck
broke down so I had to do guard duty. When you did guard duty everyone had to
know the password. If you didn't know the password they would usually get
blown away.
