22.    Did you get lots of shots before going to war?
       We got many shots in boot camp.

23.    How did you know the war had ended?
       That particular day we were up on a hill and could see the ocean.
       There were about 2000 ships out in Buckner Bay. They had been
       told the war was over and they were so excited that they started
       firing their ammunition to celebrate. It was like a huge July 4
       celebration. We asked our superiors what was going on and they
       went to find out. They come back and told us to take cover and not
       to come out until told to do so. The navy just keeps celebrating. All
       those bullets that went up had to come down and they were coming
       down in our area. Thirteen men got killed that night.

24.    How did you get home from the war?
       We came home on a transport from Japan. A transport is about the
       size of a long football field. I had to stand guard duty three flights
       down; down in the transport coming home and we had some very
       big and deep swells to go through. It made a lot of men sick. It
       took 12 days to get home.

25.    Did you know anyone who became a prisoner of war?
       Didn't know many. A man from Lawrence, last name was Wilson,
       but I never knew what happened to him.

26.    Did you know many men from Emery County that went to war?
       There were many of us from Emery County that went.

27.    Did you capture any of the enemy? What did you do with them if you did?
       There were some that were captured. I don't know what happened
       to them. The Japs were crazy. You had to kill them to make them
       quit. To my knowledge I never killed any of them.

28.    Did you write any love letters to anyone while you were in the war?
       Yes

29.    What did you do in the war?
       I was a truck driver. I hauled lots of dirt. We had to build an airstrip
       and we built it in 36 hours. I hauled lots of supplies from the LST
       transports to the men.
       I did one month of KP (kitchen) duty. Mess duty also.

30.    Did you know any tail gunners in the airplanes?
       I knew one man from Lawrence that was a tail gunner. I'm not sure
       what happened to him.
